The USAPL of Minnesota season kicked off with the annual State Open at the New Hope YMCA with remarkable success.  Beginners and veterans alike came to this event to battle for the prestigious  State champion titles. Some notable lifting; Christy Bang entered this event to help prepare herself for Women's Nationals in a couple weeks. She managed to reset her squat, bench and total record in the process. Christy will be seeing her first national event in Chicago which will be the largest Women's event ever for the USAPL.  Brain Vanoray started out at his first meet this year in the 148 weight class with a 755 total which included a 375 deadlift done with a hook grip. A Big Brad in the making? We shall see.

Mark Schultenover in the 165 weight class made his return to the platform in a major way with a two new master records in the bench and total of 1345. This overtakes the records set by Minnesota lifting legion Ron Hoff who also made his return this past year to the USAPL. I see a major match up coming with these two lifters. Mike Hulse owner of Powersource Nutrition came in second with a total of 1300 which included a squat of 530.

In the 181 weight class multiple state champion and national level lifter Pat Beaumaster came to defend his title after a short hiatus with a 1530 total which included a 580 squat. Pat had quite a few fans in the crowd. He is a New Hope Police officer and works with many of the kids in the activities in the YMCA in which many where present to cheer him on. Pat was fiercely challenged by Tony Reid who pulled a massive 595 pull to produce a total of 1510

The 198 weight class saw the return of Nick Tylutki who is about as well rounded of a lifter as they come. Nick is one of the fastest raising lifters in the USAPL ranks I have ever seen. In a few short years he has won State and National titles and medalled in IPF contests around the world. Nick unofficially set Jr American records in the squat (680) and in the deadlift (670). Nick also made a run at a 700 pound deadlift for his 3rd attempt. He just got it past his knees but ran out of gas.  Sean Timomen placed second with a very solid performance. Sean seemed to have trouble getting all three lifts to work all at once in past events, but today was without a doubt his day ending up with a 1540 total being one of his best ever.  The 220 class saw a fine performance by Mitch Edelstein who has finally got accustomed to his new bodyweight in the 220 weight class with a squat of 605 nearing his PR. Mitch now has regained his state title.

The YMCA

I want to thank Chad Lanners and his staff for their help in making this meet a fantastic success. They help with everything from set up to tear down. I want to thank all the kids of the YMCA for helping out as well. The YMCA staff was there for us every step of the way helping us out with everything we needed. The YMCA was very impressed by what we did today and is very interested in continuing their support of USA Powerlifting in Minnesota. They are very much behind our drug free stance. It looks like a go to have this event and others again in New Hope. I also want to thank the crowd at this event for their very vocal support of the lifters. This is without a doubt one of the larger crowds I have seen at a MN meet. Thank you for your support.

The state open looks like the start of another great season of lifting in Minnesota. This is all possible with the efforts of so many. If I have missed anyone I am very sorry. What we all saw today is the reason why USA Powerlifting in Minnesota is such a dominant force second to none. I hope to see many of you out there for the rest of what looks like to be the best season ever.
