Men's Open Nationals 2006

July 7-9th
Mami Florida

With the colossal force of an angry 800 pound gorilla Minnesota made some major noise once again at the 'Big Show' of Men's Open Nationals. The noise was heard loud and clear up here from way down south and  I will attempt to sort out the crazy strength Minnesota showed the USA. From an assortment of reports (via email, phone calls, face to face) I will report best I can. (This report may be updated later on)

181's

Tony Reid placed 3rd in a very deep weight class. This was a major move upward as this National caliber lifter normally has taken 5th in years past. This guy from the Pound is on the move for sure.

198s

Sean Timonen is a lifter well known in the Minnesota ranks for his big lifts and fiery intensity on the platform. He stunned lifters and crowd alike at the Zumbro Valley Open a few months ago. Often times after big meets lifters lay back for a while. That was not the case for Sean. He went to Nationals and placed 6th in the deepest weight class in the meet with a 633 squat.

220s

Another figure and elder statesman of Minnesota Powerlifting  Mitch Edelstein pulled off something that  I can't deny in saying that I never thought would happen. Mitch is someone who keeps coming back meet after meet and never seems to be phased by plateaus or less then stellar results in his lifting. He even attended Men's Masters which  unfortunately he bombed out. Mitch turned it all around and took 2nd at this event with 3 state records and a 1690 total. Congrats to the come back kid.. (beating those 10 years younger then him of course :)

242s

The man of steel we know as Nick Tylutki started off his event facing a seasoned vet named Tony Harris who has routinely glided to wins against scores of top level lifters with much room to spare. Nick as I have seen myself personally has found himself in lift by lift battles with many lifters. Some meets he takes it all. Some he does not. Now I have to tell you from talking with the humble Nick knew that Tony Harris was someone that could easily put a dent into his super lifts on a average day. Nick I felt sold himself short going into this event when I talked to him.

Nick started out his lifting and it appeared his predictions of getting beat where going to come true. The descriptions I got of his squats where 'very rough' and he almost bombed out. Nick managed to get his lifts in and got within striking distance of Tony Harris. Nick the strong and smart lifter knew that it would take all he got to beat Tony. Nick attempted a 760 pull which he tried at the MN state meet which he could not lock out. Nick new the time to do 760 was now and he made the attempt. Nick ripped 760 and beat Tony Harris by a tie to become the National Champion! Nick was doing this going 15 pounds lighter then the rest of the pack.

275s

The Tank, The brick, the man who is tall as he is wide and built with 3 deadly lifts named Greg Wagner takes on the best and places 2nd.

if you have any more information about this event or if you have pictures/movies of this event please get back to me ASAP. Congrats to our Minnesota lifters representing drug free lifting at its finest. Please visit the USA Powerlifting forum for ongoing updates as well.
