Tribute to Roger Davis
In sports, most athletes have someone who makes an impression or in some way influences their careers. In powerlifting, Roger Davis was this person for many of us. Roger was the most incredible bench presser I've ever witnessed. The man could put up well over 300 way into his seventies. He was built for the sport. Short and stocky with a big barrel chest. He had a special sound which he made as he set up and he would make the same sound as he locked the weight out. He would get off the bench and turn to acknowledge the fans as everyone was always cheering loudly for him. A true crowd favorite. Roger was at his best though, as a mentor and encourager for other lifters. His tough appearance and LA cop confidence, were sometimes intimidating. But Roger was the most friendly guy you could ever meet. Always a jokester too. Our sport will miss him. Others will miss him too. He was the biggest booster of Buffalo High School football. He is a legend up there. He drove the bus for every game for many years. The players loved him. Everyone in the city knew him. Roger had retired from the LA police department and located himself up here in Minnesota.
We in
the powerlifting world know the impact that he has had. The record
books will have his name in it for many years to come. His legend
will live on. Roger, you were a special person and you will be
missed by us all. Thanks for all you did for us as athletes and as
friends.
Sincerely. Gary Grahn
