MN at Men's Nationals Report

June 13-15

Killeen Tx

For Minnesota and our nearby friends when it comes to the big show Men’s Nationals there was not a major attendance. This did not mean it was not noteworthy for those who did attend.  This report is put together mostly from posts from Rich Edinger on the USAPL forum (www.usapowerliftingforum.com).

First off two areas from the NGB meeting that I think are noteworthy:

Logos:  Now the details of this have not been made %100 clear to me, but as far as I can tell if you as a lifter have a sponsor that is not on the IPF approved list you can wear their logo on a shirt on the platform.  This is beyond logical as opening this door and allowing such logos can only encourage sponsorship and bring on new lifters

Knee Sleeves: This is an area of major discussion on the USAPL forum (www.usapowerliftingforum) and what they play in raw lifting. From what I have read knee sleeves are going to stay in raw lifting. The area of debate is centered around the Velcro type knee sleeves made by Inzer. Some feel they give too much support.  Some feel they are no different than the ones sold by Jackals Gym. Either way both types of wraps are to remain in raw lifting for now. We shall see how this discussion pans out in the months to come.

As for the lifting action: Here are some reports received

“ Just got off the phone with Tom Hines. He went 3/3 in the squats finishing with 650. Some junior squatted 711 but is opening at 396 in the bench. He is in the running at 198. And is on pace to shatter the MN total record. (when he set the record he only squatted 600.) Meet is going sloow. 4 flights and they just started the 3rd flight of squattters. So much for the 2 hour rule as the 4th flight squatters won't start squatting until 6:00 or 6:15.”

A few hours later

“Just got off the phone with Minnesota's Tom Hines. He just got done with benches about 15 minute ago! Looks to be pulling at 10:00 pm. He is still in the running, but he had bad luck on his benches, only gettting his opener at 462. He missed 485 twice. His sub total is 505 kilos/ 1113 pounds. His opener in the deadlift will break his own MN total record! 617 pull will give him elite total. He is 17 pounds behind Greg Jones and is in the running for 2nd place. If Tom gets all three deadlifts, he will have a great total.

According to Tom, Jesse Canton only got his opener in the squat, 584-589? Missing his second and third attempts with groove issues. Both Tom and Jesse will have to remain mentally tough and focus as the meet will be going on until for a few more hours. Good luck, boys!”

Nick Tylutki went to this contest at a lower bodyweight largely in part to his change in professions (he is now a policeman rather than behind a desk computer guru). He played a tough game and its reported by Lance Slaughter who brought this report.

“Going into DL, Hartman trails Tylutki by 22 lb (10kg). Tylutki's successful opener at 705 put enough distance ahead of Hartman’s easy opener of 666 appears to solidify the win. Hartman passed on his second. Tylutki pulled 733 on his second. Tylutki asks for 738 for his third and final. Missed it. Tylutki out in front by 88 lb. Hartman calls for 755 to get the win. GOOD!!!! Jeremy Hartman is the 220 national champion by virtue of bodyweight.”

Jon Krogram set a JR state bench record at 275s with 500 pounds and took 4th with Greg Wagner taking 3rd.  (at the time of this report, I do not have their exact numbers, please send them to me at mad@thepress.org so I can update this report)
