Rosemount United Methodist Church/ Youth Powerlifting Seminar Week 1
This Sunday, 11/2, marked the formalization of a new program in MN USAPL. Brad Madvig, Tony Reid, Aaron and Jane Welborn conducted a Powerlifting seminar for a group of high school students at Rosemount United Methodist Church. The youth are all members of the church High School Youth program, of which Jane and Aaron are leaders. Sunday's session addressed what is Powerlifting; what does the USAPL stand for; proper squat technique, including a hands-on session; basic accessory movements; and basic squat equipment.
We had an approximate 50/50 mix of young ladies and men, and everybody had a great time. Stay tuned for more info, including pictures, as we spend the next two Sundays teaching the bench press and deadlift.
Week 2
This Sunday, 11/9, we went over bench press technique and assistance exercises. Paul Wong and Maura Shuttleworth joined us to share some of their valuable insight into the subject. The seminar went very well.
Next Sunday we will be teaching the deadlift. Visitors are welcome. Please contact Aaron Welborn at apwelb@hotmail.com with any questions or comments. We are very interested in conducting the seminar at additional locations.
This Sunday, 11/16 marked the culmination of the MN Youth Powerlifting Seminar.
This session focused on proper deadlift technique and assistance exercises. Joining us were Brad Madvig, Tony Reid, Paul Wong, and Nick Tylutki. The enthusiasm and energy were awesome. Before we knew it we were piling more weight on the bar to see who could pull the most. Competitiveness and tenacity were making their presence felt.
As a follow-up, we will be scheduling group training days with the kids to help us solidify their training routines and be a resource moving forward. I would like to make an appeal to all MN USAPL members to look around you. Take a minute to notice young lifters who show a good work ethic and a desire to succeed. Strike up a conversation with them about the sport. Tell them about the meet in May and offer to help them prepare. You never know, you might be talking to a future champion!
Thanks to everyone who made this happen. Mad, Tony, Paul, Maura, and Nick for your time and attention. Rosemount United Methodist Church for providing the venue, and Jason Bohn for providing the vision. The Press Gym for their enthusiastic support in loaning equipment.
